Course Aim

The aim of this COSHH in the Food Industry Training Course is to give the learner the required level of knowledge needed to understand the CoSHH rules, to be able to produce a CoSHH risk assessment for a small business, or follow a prepared assessment.


Learning Objectives

On completion of the course, you should be able to:

  • Identify the hazards present in the food industry and how workers are exposed to them
  • Identify a number of hazards which cause harm
  • Explain the importance of cleaning in the food industry
  • Name the four food hazard types
  • Name the 14 main food allergens
  • Recognise the seriousness of food allergies
  • Identify the main cleaning chemical types and their purpose
  • Name the main COSHH legislation and who it applies to
  • Identify WELS and substance categories
  • List the requirements of a COSHH risk assessment
  • Identify the meaning of the terms hazard and risk

Training Course Content

This course is made up of the following modules:

  • An Introduction to COSHH in the Food Industry

    This section introduces the learner to the course and explains exposure to chemicals can cause significant health problems or injuries.

  • Module 1 - Cleaning Hazards

    This section of the course concentrates on the types of hazardous substances that workers may come across within the food industry, these include cleaning chemicals, allergens, or others. It also looks at WELs (Workplace Exposure Limits) and how substances within the workplace can be considered harmful or toxic

  • Module 2 - Handling Hazards

    This module of the course looks at the five steps to a risk assessment and why a 'permit to work' may be needed. It also looks at the use of safety data sheets and why they are important, along with types of PPE (personal protective equipment) that should be used when handling chemicals.

  • Module 3 - Handling Hazards

    In this final section, you will cover why maintaining health surveillance is important when working with potentially hazardous substances. It also looks at why staff training is important and how workers will need to be kept up to date with any changes and may require practice in emergency procedures.


Assessment

On completion of the course lessons and training material an online assessment will automatically unlock. The assessment will contain 30 multiple-choice questions and a mark of 75% or above will be required to pass.

The assessment will be marked instantly and so you will know straight away if you have passed or not. If you don't pass first time there's no need to worry. Unlimited resits at absolutely no additional charge are available so you can retake the assessment again as many times as you need to.
