This Unconscious Bias course has been designed to help learners understand that opinions and thoughts that initially come to mind aren't necessarily accurately formed but are created unconsciously due to our personal experience, which can often lead to biased decision-making, such as judgements based on stereotypes.

Correcting unconscious bias thinking is important because of the impact it can have in the workplace. Currently, 36% of UK adults have reported workplace discrimination, with age discrimination being the biggest contributor.

With several types of unconscious biases to challenge, this course raises awareness which will empower individuals looking to improve their decision-making skills for their own benefit and for bringing a level of equality and diversity to the forefront of the workplace. A diverse workplace with less bias will create a richer workforce, but to do this, it means we must be willing to challenge and accept our own unconscious.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is unconscious bias?

In simplistic terms, unconscious bias is when a decision or judgement is made based on experience, assumptions, and even prejudices. The brain is triggered automatically to make quick judgements and assessments. It is heavily influenced by a vast amount of factors like our background and societal stereotypes, to name just a few, and our unconscious bias tends to affect our attitudes and behaviour towards other people.

What are the everyday types of unconscious bias?

The most common types of unconscious bias we often overlook are gender bias and ageism. Looking closer at our lives, conformity bias is often exhibited and common, which is prevalent in a workplace where there are groups. Conformity bias is where it tends to be an easier option to change our opinions to suit the bigger group rather than speak up. Awareness of certain unconscious biases, especially those exhibited, allows us to deal with them.

Why is unconscious bias training important?

Becoming conscious of our biases means being able to see from a different perspective. Having an unfiltered view is a challenge, and tackling this head-on means that the environment you work in, or any environment in general, becomes fairer and, thus, affects areas of a business positively.
