New and Expectant Mothers at the Workplace

Up to half of the workforce will probably go through the experience of pregnancy at some period in their career. Pregnancy can carry with it potential risks for both the employer and employee if the relevant regulations and processes are not implemented and adhered to ensure the health and safety of the employee.

The employer has a legal duty to carry out risk assessments in the workplace, which will address any potential issues that may be, or become, a risk to the employee's health, safety and well being.

Who is this course for?

This online course has been designed to help expectant mothers or those who have given birth in the last six months to understand the health and safety policies and processes that should be in place in their place of work.

Course aim

This course aims to give expectant and new mothers the relevant information they will need to help them understand the importance of following good health and safety practices in their workplace. This information is designed to inform them of the importance fo following best practice put in place by the employer.

Online Course content

This online course covers the following topics:

  • Pregnancy at Work

    This section looks at the pregnancy timeline, which covers what you are entitled to at work and pregnancy and maternity discrimination.

  • Health and Safety During Pregnancy

    This section covers common risks, risk assessment for new and expectant mothers and health and safety in the workplace.

  • New and Expectant Mothers Scenario

    This section covers telling your employer you are pregnant, meeting with your employer or HR and returning to work.

Course aim

On completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Explain the stages of the pregnancy timeline
  • Identify the regulations for new and expectant mothers
  • Explain maternity rights and pay due
  • Identify some common risks and health issues that may be in the workplace
  • Explain the importance of risk assessments for new and expectant mothers

Course duration

The average time required to complete the learning is approximately 30 - 35 minutes, however the course is designed to go at the pace of the learner and can be completed in more time if needed.


The online assessment for the course consists of 15 multiple choice questionse. In order to be successful, candidates must achieve a 75% (12 or above) pass mark to obtain the certificate.

Course Certification

On successful completion of the online course assessment, the candidate will be able to print/save their course certificate. In addition to this, an email is sent to the candidate containing a link to the certificate.

This is the simplest, most convenient way to achieve compliance. Also, a QR code has been added to the certificate, which can be scanned by a smartphone to establish the certificate’s validity.
