Asbestos Awareness Training.

asbestos awareness

Many of us know about asbestos, but do you know what it is and how it can affect anyone who comes into contact with it? Well read on my friend and lets open up a dialogue about asbestos awareness….

Asbestos is a fibrous material that comes in multiple colours. It is 100th finer that a human hair! The main types of asbestos are:

  • Chrysolite (white)
  • Crocidolite (blue)
  • Amosite (brown)

If you work in one of the following professions you will benefit from asbestos awareness training greatly:

  • Roofer
  • Alarm Installer
  • Gas Fitter
  • Telecommunication Engineer

Asbestos can be found in a extensive range of products such as:

  • Wall beams
  • Floor tiles
  • Insulating board
  • Textured coatings
  • Textiles
  • Sprayed coating on ceilings

Please note that asbestos is only a risk if fibres are released into the air and breathed in. Asbestos was banned in the U.K. in 2000 but people suffering from past exposure has a fatality rate of around 4,000 in the U.K. individuals frequently exposed to asbestos are 5 times more likely to contract cancer than the general population. If over a period of time a person breathes in the fibres they can contract diseases like:

  • Mesothelioma
  • Asbestosis
  • Fibrosis
  • Lung Cancer (asbestos related)

Responsibilities under The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012:

  • Keeping exposure below a certain limit
  • Preventing exposure to fibres.
  • Keeping exposure to fibres as low as reasonably possible (when unable to avoid exposure 100%)
  • presuming that all materials contain asbestos (unless there is absolute evidence to the contrary)
  • Efficient and sufficient records that allow other workers to identify the materials
  • Risk assessment

All workers who are working with materials that contain asbestos should be trained so they can recognise said materials and know what procedures to take if they come across them.
